Starball - Superfans Review

Starball
Superfans

By Joseph Filipak

In my continuing quest to find new power-pop bands, I have come across some that I would go to the ends of the world to see, and those that I wouldn’t go across the street to put out if they we’re on fire! Harsh, yes maybe, but also the truth. So with that said, when I tell you that Starball is one of the best that I have heard, I’m telling you like it is! Fronted by Ms. Tamar Berk, (guitar and vocals) this band puts out some of the best power-pop around. Superfans opens with "Better Be", a song that in the first 5 seconds lets you know that you’re in for a pop rave up! Ms. Berk is aided in her quest for power-pop stardom by Mike Zelenko (drums), Eric Hanna (lead guitar) and Steve Denekas (Bass), and they serve the queen well - very well indeed!

The thing that sets Starball apart from the rest, is that they simply have the songs. Superfans contains a plethora of great songs and one after the other, Starball delivers. Power-pop is often over looked as silly, or just ear candy, but then those who think this (or that) are missing the point. What power-pop is, is well-written catchy songs that are intended to buoy our spirits, and that’s what Starball does song after song! As God is my witness, if you like power-pop, you will like Superfans. The song "Wanna Come Back" is a single if ever I heard one, but this could also be said about 7 out of the 13 tracks on the CD. Yes it’s that good, hell it’s that great. But you have to understand that I love this style of music because it has that blend of rock meets pop, in a 3-minute song, that makes my heart beat faster then someone mid-panic attack.

Those new to the power-pop style of music would be well served if they picked up this CD. I say this knowing that there are about 100 other CD’s that you should also buy. But I think so much of what Starball is doing that I feel safe in the recommendation (shit that’s a long word!) I also feel that after hearing the CD and seeing them live, they sound less like a local band and more like a national band, which makes me wonder how long it will be before Starball is signed to a major label! Check the ChicagoGigs concert search for the name Starball, and then go see them, and if you can’t find the CD, email me and I will give you directions. Go see, go do Starball. Highly recommend! The rest is up to you.
